Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) and its consortium has clinched a €170 million ($211 million) contract to construct a new LNG port at Swinoujscie near Szcecin, Poland.

Boskalis, whose stake in the contract amounts to €75 million ($93.2 million), said on Friday it will act as the lead contractor in a consortium which includes Hochtief Construction A.G. (Germany), Per Aarsleff A/S (Denmark) and Doraco (Poland).

The contract was awarded by the Maritime Office of Poland.

"To allow the port to accommodate large vessels, Boskalis will create a turning basin and deepen the access channel," the company said.

According to Boskalis, a total of more than 8 million cubic metres of sand will be dredged.

"Furthermore, Boskalis will construct a 3.3 kilometer breakwater to protect the port," it said.

It added that the project will be executed with a combination of "small to large sized trailer suction hopper dredgers, floating cranes and dry earth moving equipment".
 
"The Boskalis strategy is designed to benefit from the key macro-economic drivers that are fueling global demand in our selected markets: global trade, increasing energy consumption, expanding population pressures and the challenges of changing climate conditions," Boskalis said.

Work on the construction of the port will commence mid-2010 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
