Ghana's ports need cash injection to develop

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s (GPHA) General Manager of Corporate Planning has underlined the operational challenges facing the country’s ports.

In a no-holds-barred presentation during a Continuing Professional Development seminar, Wisdom Segbefia said the difficulties included infrastructure capacity constraints, inadequate funds for development, inadequate space for development and cumbersome cargo clearing procedures.

During the seminar, organised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Segbefia urged Ghana’s government to inject much-needed capital into the country’s two major ports, Tema and Takoradi, which, he said, would provide the necessary infrastructure for development and expansion.

Segbefia pointed out that GPHA had the potential of developing Tema into a regional container gateway and Takoradi into a regional oil and gas services hub.
